OVERVIEW
Early School teachers maintain a learning environment consistent with the Montessori philosophy that supports the Charlotte Preparatory School mission statement and upholds the Four Pillars of Leadership: Respect, Integrity, Perseverance, and Courage. The Assistant Teacher position requires patience, respect for children, and the ability to encourage the children to be independent. The classroom adults model appropriate manners and behaviors. The Assistant Teacher supports the instruction of children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori by performing the following duties.
This is a full-time/40-hr. per week, non-exempt, 10-month position, with general hours 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Abide by all guidelines outlined in the school’s handbooks, policies, rules, and regulations, as adopted. Become knowledgeable about Montessori terminology and methods. Assist the lead teacher in providing the children with a “prepared environment.” Keep the classroom clean and inviting. Assist with individual and/or group activities to support children's growth in social, emotional, and academic areas. Assist the children by moving around to support and guide them during the Montessori work cycle as they choose, complete, and return work to its location. Promote independence in individual work to develop concentration, as well as group work to promote socialization. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children, parents, and co-workers. Participate in Early School events as requested by the Division Head. Serve snacks and lunch while helping children learn how to help themselves. Supervise children during the work cycle, lunch, nap, and recess, as needed. Lead the class in the absence of the lead teacher, alongside a substitute teacher. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Early Childhood Education and/or Montessori certification desired (accredited college or university). Hours toward the above considered. 1 – 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Team orientation – able to work effectively with other members of the school administrative team, other faculty members, parents, students, and other school/Montessori community colleagues. Sees the school as an entire entity, rather than an isolated Early School division. Strong communication and organizational skills with high levels of attention to detail Positive, enthusiastic, and warm personality Strong work ethic, proactive, professional, and flexible Confident with guiding groups of children through transitions and group times. Demonstrates patience and respect for small children and their natural development as inherent throughout the teachings and philosophy of Maria Montessori Commitment to the mission and values of the school.
